Temperatures can drop to -20°C to -30°C in peak winter months (December-February). Even in November and March, expect temperatures between -5°C to -15°C at night. Proper winter clothing is essential.
This is a challenging trip due to high altitudes and extreme cold. We recommend prior experience with high altitude travel. People with heart conditions, severe asthma or other serious medical conditions should consult their doctor before attempting this trip.
Essential items include: down jacket, thermal innerwear, fleece layers, waterproof gloves, balaclava, woolen socks, snow boots, sunglasses (UV protection), and sunscreen. A detailed packing list will be provided upon booking.
Winter driving in Spiti requires experienced drivers and proper vehicles. Our tempo travelers are equipped for winter conditions with experienced drivers. However, road closures due to snow are possible and itineraries may need adjustment for safety.
Homestays and hotels have western/Indian toilets. At some remote locations, basic pit toilets may be the only option. Carry toilet paper and hand sanitizer as these may not always be provided.
